TANDO (Tynedale and Newcastle District Outdoor Club) was founded in 1952 and runs its Pineglades woodland site near Heddon-on-the-Wall, a few miles west of Newcastle. There are sheltered camping areas, well-kept lawns, heated clubhouses, a woodland walk, a Finnish-style sauna with a wood-burning stove and an above-ground pool for warmer weather, plus petanque and miniten.
The site is open all year, though some facilities are reduced from November to March. Visitors can come for the day, camp, bring a caravan or motorhome, or rent one of the club caravans. All visits must be arranged in advance. It is a good base for Hadrian's Wall and the Northumberland coast.
